Medical Gas Systems and Safety
This course provides comprehensive training on hospital medical gas systems, essential for equipment service technicians. Students will gain a thorough understanding of pipeline and cylinder supply methods, including the function and location of zone valves and area alarms. The curriculum covers various connection types such as yokes, pin index safety systems, and Diameter Index Safety System (DISS) fittings, alongside principles of pressure regulation and reduction. Specific medical gas systems, including oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air, and vacuum, are examined in detail, emphasizing the critical role of hypoxic guard interlocks. Emphasis is placed on identifying and preventing gas purity and cross-connection hazards. The course also integrates crucial aspects of electrical and fire safety within operating room environments and introduces proper lockout/tagout procedures. A significant portion focuses on the technician's responsibilities in medical gas system verification and routine maintenance.

Syllabus
Course Objectives: 1. Describe the fundamental principles of medical gas pipeline systems, including cylinder supply, central supply sources, and distribution networks. 2. Identify the function and operation of critical medical gas system components such as zone valves, area alarms, pressure regulators, and flow meters. 3. Demonstrate proper connection and disconnection procedures for medical gas cylinders and patient delivery devices using pin index safety systems, Diameter Index Safety System (DISS) connectors, and yokes. 4. Explain the hazards associated with medical gas cross-connections, gas purity, and oxygen enrichment, including the operation of hypoxic guard interlocks and their safety implications. 5. Outline essential safety protocols for working with medical gas systems, including electrical and fire safety in operating room environments, and lockout/tagout procedures. 6. Perform and document pre-use verification and routine maintenance checks on medical gas delivery equipment, ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards. Grading for this course will be structured as follows: Knowledge Checks 10%, Assignments and Labs 30%, Quizzes 25%, and Final Exam 35%. Each component is designed to assess your understanding and practical application of the course material. Students will be expected to demonstrate familiarity with various medical gas delivery devices, pipeline components, and safety equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, medical gas cylinders, gas regulators, flow meters, patient circuit connections, pipeline outlet stations, zone valve boxes, and medical air compressors/vacuum pumps.
